Daft question — especially if you're a mum — Christmas is coming!
You feel the urgent need to 'make Christmas special' — so you shop, you decorate, you do extra kindnesses. Will you go to the Victorian Christmas Market in Matlock? A pantomime? The Highfields Christmas Concert? Are you looking for some 'Christmas Spirit'?
Sadly, if you're going through a tough time, you may be finding a spirit of despair instead - you wouldn't be the first, and it isn't surprising. We know The Nativity Story - all those school plays! - and perhaps it gave us a glimmer of something special. But somehow the 'real thing' just . . . eluded us . . . or faded over the years.
Because it's about a power and purpose stronger and more incredible than any pantomime or film (yes, even "Harry Potter") - and it's not fiction.
The story 'beyond the school nativity play' is where the true hope of Christmas lies - in a baby who's more than a baby. He came to rescue a people at war with God - that's why the angels declared "PEACE!'
So don't kill yourself in 'making Christmas special' - it already is. Give yourself a break - take time out to discover the rest of the plot. It could transform your celebration of the birth of Jesus Christ, Emmanuel - "God with us".
Treasures of the Snowvideo from the church library during your Christmas preparations? Set in snowy winter Switzerland, this classic tale will captivate the whole family. It's perfect for a wintery day!
